Meet the people who want to say thank you
Meet the people who want to say thank you
This picture shows Sumitra, a beautiful girl who was born in a leprosy colony to parents who both had the disease. She herself does not have leprosy. We trained her as a nurse and she’s now working for us at Sewa Kendra.
Sumitra has married a man who has nothing to do with leprosy... amazing, in a country where the stigma of leprosy ruins lives.
Her mother was one of 12 kids so poor they rarely had enough to eat. Her spinster aunt had been incarcerated in a leprosy colony, where she noticed that children of leprosy affected people got free food and education - so Sumitra’s mother was sent to live there to relieve the impoverished situation at home.
Her mother did catch leprosy - but she also fell in love, married and produced this gorgeous daughter. Sumitra is now happily married and has healthy children of her own.
“Thank you for my future”
